God's Word

"Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”  Psalm 119:18 



Quoting Isaiah, the apostle Paul wrote, "'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him'--but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit" (1 Corinthians 2:9-10). God's Spirit knows God's thoughts. When the believer reads God's Word, it is the Spirit of God, living within us, who reveals God's words and thoughts to us.

Today's passage, then, is a prayer of preparation for our Bible reading. Our minds can be distracted. We can simply read the Bible to check if off for the day. Prior to reading God's Word, here is a prayer we should pray.

Dear heavenly Father, Thank You for giving me Your Word. Thank You for the privilege of opening it and reading it today. I admit to You that I am in a hurry. I am busy and distracted. So please slow me down. Help me focus. Keep distractions away. Help me listen to things in Your Word that I need to hear. Use Your Word to point out areas of sin that I need to confess. Open my eyes to blind spots that I keep missing. Show me where I am off track. Open my eyes to a biblical perspective of where I am and where I should be. Instruct me regarding business interactions. Help me understand and apply Your instructions. Guide me regarding my relationships. I desire to be a godly parent. Open my eyes to Your Word that will help me raise my children according to Your ways. Lord, I desire to know You more fully and deeply. Speak to me in a new and fresh way through Your Word. Father, please open my eyes to see the wonderful truths You have for me. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The Teeter - Totter Syndrome

" Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;   in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."  Proverbs 3:5-6 There is a dangerous dynamic that sets up in many marriages. I call it the teeter-totter syndrome. It is based upon the dynamic where we naturally respond to our spouse’s behavior. When one spouse moves to an unhealthy or extreme position, the other spouse will almost always adjust to the other extreme to protect themselves and the relationship. Imagine two people sitting face-to-face in the middle of a teeter-totter on a playground. They are close and their weight is balanced. But what happens if one of them moves backwards? You know how it works. On a teeter-totter, everything the other person does on their side affects you on your side—just like marriage. The God Who Saves

Scriptures: Ephesians 2:8-9   Recently I was talking with a fellow about his spiritual life. When I asked, "Are you saved?" he answered, "No, but I'm working at it." When I pressed him, he explained that he was making some changes in his life. He had given up smoking and drinking, among other things. I knew that I should help him understand a few important principles, as his only guarantee so far was better health. What this gentleman needed to realize was that what we do or what we give up for Jesus doesn't amount to much. The Lord isn't looking for people who change a few habits by sheer force of will; He's calling people to surrender themselves to Him. The only action God expects of a "seeker" is to believe in Jesus--that He is who He says, He will do what He says, He has the authority to forgive, and He will equip His people to live a godly life.
