Drugs

Honor God With Balance in Your Life:
Drugs

"For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things."  Philippians 3:18-19 (NIV).

Chemists and pharmacists have opened up new worlds in the human experience. Pills and powders, gel caps and IV drips are available today that Paul and Silas could not have imagined. Some are legal; others are illegally synthesized. Some, when used under prescription, can do amazing things to restore and sustain a person’s well-being. Others deliver short-term excitement but miserable long-term damage to the human bodies God created and still claims.

As you care for your temple of the Holy Spirit, you will be tempted to take shortcuts to feeling good. Drugs, legal and illegal, are one of them. If a drug is illegal, that should settle it for a Christian. God calls us to obey all laws. But even legal drugs can be misused and result in tissue damage and destructive addictions.

But the real problem is a mind-set that values feeling good above doing right. Here is Paul’s sad conclusion: “Many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame” (Philippians 3:18,19).

As you make decisions about your own drug use, ask yourself these things: Is this good for my temple? Would my Creator and Redeemer approve? God bless
